It's lichen growing on rocks. Lichen (pronounced LIKE-en) is a strange life form in which fungi and algae depend on each other totally. It can endure incredibly harsh conditions. I imagine life on Mars would look like this. (The brown things are pine needles and birch catkins. I don't expect to see those on Mars.)
